13:15-13:40: Hiromu Sakai – “How to clear common hurdles in the new ALC/CS classroom design”

Responding to the development of technology and changes in society, traditional classroom designs are often replaced by new ones in many subjects. Language learning classrooms are no exception, but teachers often find common hurdles make these new designs less effective. There is no single solution applicable to all classrooms, but useful ideas to clear such hurdles have accumulated as a result of practice all over the world in the past decades. Here, the presenter introduces some of these ideas and discusses how to apply them to Communication Strategies (CS) and Academic Lecture Comprehension (ALC) classes in CELESE.

13:45-14:10: Kevin Knight – “Using numbers to teach science and engineering students to avoid plagiarizing”

How can numbers be used to teach students how to quote and paraphrase source materials in order to avoid plagiarism? The presenter explains a teaching approach that resulted from a student request for an extremely simple example in a course on concept building and discussion (CBD). As the students are science and engineering majors, the presenter decided to substitute lists of numbers for sentences, and the student feedback seemed to indicate that the example was effective and could be part of a longer explanation in the future.

14:15-14:40: Laurence Anthony – “Bringing AI into the critical thinking classroom”

This presentation looks at useful applications of AI in a course on concept building and discussion (CBD) that is designed for science and engineering students. Exposing students to the outputs generated by ChatGPT and other generative AI tools allow them to not only evaluate their problem-solving and critical thinking competencies, but also evaluate their expository writing in terms of logical flow and accuracy.
