Together with the VocaTT research group, Waseda University and the Center for English Language Education in Science and Engineering (CELESE) are co-sponsoring a public lecture as follows.
Title: Automatic Generation of English Vocabulary Questions
Speaker: Yuni Susanti, Ph.D.
Abstract: Conducting a language test is indispensable to evaluate the proficiency of language learners. However, manual construction of questions is time-consuming and requires a high level of skill from experts in test question writing. An automatic question generation system can be a breakthrough by assisting experts in making questions more efficiently. This talk will discuss the speaker’s novel approach on automatic generation of multiple-choice English vocabulary questions, modeling the questions after TOEFL vocabulary questions. This talk will discuss specifically 1) the method for creating multiple-choice questions automatically, 2) two kinds of evaluation for assessing the quality of the automatically generated questions: test taker-based evaluation and expert-based evaluation.
Speaker info: Dr. Susanti is a graduate of the Computer Science department at Tokyo Institute of Technology, where she studied for both her Master’s and Doctoral degrees. Her doctoral dissertation is titled “Automatic English Vocabulary Question Generation for Efficient Measurement of Learner Proficiency” and was a specially selected dissertation by the Information Processing Society of Japan in 2018. Her work emphasized distractor improvement and question difficulty control which are key problems in the area of automatic question generation. Currently, she is working at Fujitsu in Japan as a natural language processing (NLP) researcher and engineer.
